This morning I woke up with a headache so Erika and I stayed on the campsite while Paul went to Sion on his bike.

When Paul arrives back from Sion, we ride higher into the mountains to go to the glacier. Officialy we are not allowed to ride here but the road was too tempting.....

It is an interesting road with deep potholes, shallow water crossings, steep slopes. Nice off-road riding. But the view was worth it.

Posing proudly near the glacier

While we were taking the pictures of the bikes near the glacier, we heard a loud rumble and then we saw an avalanche in the distance. That was impressive !

What a view, and wat a nice bikes.....
The "mist" in the left part of the picture is not mist but snow from the avalanche

We parked the bikes and hiked in the valley in front of the glacier. it is so beautiful here and no other people around. We were having a great time.

The scenery was so rough and pure. The high snowcovered mountain tops, cold snow and rough rocks, the small streams of the melted snow. The fresh mountain air. It was so different from the environment we normaly live in in the Netherlands.

Hiking in the rough nature

Unfortunately we could not stay here so went walked back to our bikes and rode back to the campsite, enjoying the nice off-road experience.

Back on the campsite, we had dinner. After dinner we went to the hotel (named "De La Tza") again, with Paul, Gert, Lydia and Sienus and had some hot chocolat and beer.

When Paul went to Sion this morning, he bought some blankets for us. It was cold last night and with a blanket over our sleepingbags, it ws much more comfortable.

Friday, July 30, 1982

We woke up from the sound of rain on our tents..... not nice!. Fortunately it got better during the morning and when the sun started shining again, we rode to Sion together with Paul and Sienus to do some shopping. After we stowed our groceries away on the bikes, we left Sion to go to Derborence.

Stowing the groceries away on the bikes

On the road to Derborence, we stopped at a vineyard and sitting on the stone wall surrounding the vineyard we had lunch with fresh bread, fruit and milk.

The road to Derborence (Route de Derborence) was a very exciting road. There was no real room for a road so parts of the road are cut into the rocks and some parts are build against the mountain slope and some parts are tunnels.

The "Route de Derborence"

The last section of road was a gravel road that ended on a big parking. We had to walk the last part because cars and motorcycles were not allowed but it was worth walking for. Again we were surprised by the gorgeous views.

The view in Derborence

At a restaurant we had hot chocolat and cake and then we went back to our bikes. Because the road is very narrow, we left Derborence just after the mail coach. This way we were sure not to run into another mail coach coming from the opposite direction.

On the way back, Sienus made a picture of Paul, me and Erika that he mailed to us after our trip.

Unfortunately, it started to rain and we had to get into our rain gear. Then a thunderstorm started and I do not like thunderstorms while riding a bike in the open.....

In Evoléne, we bought a box with two kinds of "Wallisser Bier" glasses, for Paul, for Gert and Lydia (who left to go to another campsite this morning) and for us and then we rode back to the campsite.

With a piece of plastic sheet we builded an extension to our tent and had dinner with the four of us. We had Ravioli, cucumber and chickensoup. After our dinner we had coffee. The thunderstorm is not over yet so there is nothing else we can then go to sleep.
