July 23 to August 6, 1982

We pitched our tents on a nice spot with a great view on the mountains. In a restaurant in Ried-Brig, we buy a big bottle of beer so we have something to drink this afternoon.

Tonight, the 1st of August, is a national holiday in Switzerland with fireworks and bonfires on the mountains (On the 1st of August 1291, the states Uri, Schwyz en Unterwalden swore to support and protect eachother and that was the beginning of Switzerland as we know it).

This morning we got up at seven. very early for a holiday morning. After a nice warm shower and breakfast, we leave at nine to do some mountain riding. Via Fiesch and Mùnster we rode to Gletsch, the village at the begin of the road over the Furka and Grimsel pass. We take the road to the Grimsel pass, a beautifull road with many hairpins and great views.

The road up to the Grimsel pass

We also made some pictures at the Rhône Glacier and the beautiful surroundings before we start the climb up to the summit of the pass.

The beautiful surroundings of the Rhône Glacier

After a while, we stopped to take some photos but I keep hearing the sound of a bee or wasp. I was afraid that a bee or wasp may have been trapped in my motorcycle jacket so Paul and Erika help me to get out of my jacket in one quick move. No bee or wasp there but I still heared that buzzing sound.
Then we found out where it came from. A big bee was trapped in my beard.....
With a comb, we managed to free the bee without hurting me so it was a happy ending for both me and the bee.

That is where we came from
(The cross, right in the picture is from where I
took the wide picture of the passroad above
)

After we went over the summit of the Grimsel pass, the road deteriorate. There were roadworks going on and we had to ride over gravel and dirt.

After the Grimsel pass, came the Susten. On the top of the Susten pass, we stopped for lunch. Our plan was to buy French fries at a restaurant but when we saw the price, we decided to eat the bread we had with us.
We met another Dutch couple there, together on a BMW. She was riding and he was the passenger. He told it was exciting to sit on the back .......

On the Susten pass

The Susten pass is at 2262 meter above sea level and it was very popular with bikers. We saw a lot of bikes parked there.

From the top of the Susten pass, we entered a small tunnel that ended on a beautiful road. Because Erika does not want to ride very fast, Paul and I tell her that we will wait at the next junction and we open the trottle to have some fun......

Erika riding the Furka pass

While we are waiting, I got my camera to get a picture of Erika riding her BMW. She rides past us and we don't know if she had seen us so we speed to catch up with her. I did not know I had it in me but I even made a wheely while accelerating.

From the Susten pass we go to the Furka. It was interesting to see the different environments we were riding in. Every pass is different.

The Furka pass is 2430 meter above sea level and ofcourse we had to have a picture of the sign and the bikes.

2430 meter above sea level

The Rhône glacier is only a kilometer from where we took the picture so that was where we were going next.

We parked the bikes next to two other BMW's and walked around sightseeing and we bought some stickers for the bikes.
