A cold ride to Larochette

April 8 to 12, 1981

Thursday, April 8, 1982

On this long weekendtrip, my wife and I were going to camping Auf Kengert in Larochette in Luxembourg for the Easter weekend on our BMW R60/5.
After we went to the bank to change Dutch Guilders for Belgian Francs we left The Hague to start our trip.

Getting Belgian Francs

First we had to bring our cat "Tiger" to our friends Bart and Marjan, who lived in Middelburg, a hundred sixty kilometer ride past Rotterdam, Roosendaal and Goes. The weather was pretty bad with a hard wind and rain so it was not the nicest ride this time.
We stayed at their house for the night and in the evening we watched slides of a big motorcycle protest against extra tax on motorbikes and cars, that we had attended some time before.

We left our friends house (and our cat) at ten AM and past Woensdrecht we took the road to Antwerp. Near Hoogerheide, we filled the tank of the BMW for the next part of our trip. On the ringroad around Antwerp, I missed the exit I had to take so I had to get the next exit and turn back to get on the freeway to Liège, past Herentals and Hasselt. After we left Liège, we took the road to Verviers.
On the road from Liège to Verviers, we had lunch in a roadside restaurant.

Unfortunately the weather was not getting any better and instead of through the rain, we were riding through a snow storm. We rode a part of the Franchorchams racetrack in the snow with 30 km/hour, very very carefull.
After a very cold ride, we stopped at a friture in Saint-Vith for a hot coffee and something to eat. My hands and feet were so cold that I could not get the BMW on its centerstand so I used the jiffystand instead.

In the friture, we met two other Dutch bikers who are on their way in the Ardennen on a Zundapp "Grüne Elefant" from the second world war.

After some time in the warm friture, we felt a lot better and got on our bike again to ride to Diekirch in Luxembourg for another hot coffee and from Diekirch we went to our final destination for this day, camping Auf Kengert in Larochette, fortunately now without snow.
After a long and very cold ride, we parked the BMW in front of my parents mobile home on the camping.

After a nice evening in the mobile home, we slept in our tent, next to my parents mobile home and the next morning, after breakfast with my parents, we did a little sightseeing in the surrounding area and visited the castle of Larochette.

We visited the castle of Beaufort and did some more sightseeing, riding around this beautiful part of Luxembourg on our bike.

The trip home was not much better then the trip to Larochette. Again we had a lot of snow, hail and a very strong wind but finaly, after a very cold and wet ride through Belgium, we arrived in Middelburg to pick up our cat.
In Belgium, we had stopped once for coffee, in an AC restaurant in Bierges, on the E40.

We had coffee in restaurant nr. 8

After a coffee and a chat with our friends in Middelburg, we got on the bike again into the rain and wind and went home. That night we slept tired but satisfied in our own bed.
