Two day tour around Holland

May 16 & 17, 2002

It's Thursday. Although my original plan was to take the Tour Glide to the Harley Superrally near Brussels, I changed my plans. The weather is very good and I like a long ride and Brussels is less than an hour driving so I get the GoldWing for a two day tour around Holland.
I can use my parents holidayhome in Ommen, halfway the route so I only have to take clean underwear and a toothbrush with me.

Map of this trip

I use the GoldWing because it has a higher cruising speed on boring parts of the road. and when I have to make up time.

Ready to leave

Just after nine I leave home. First I took the scenery route to Zeeland. In Zeeland I drove from Kruiningen to Yerseke. I stoped in the harbour of Yerseke to look at the ships. Ports and ships have a special attraction to me. It must have something to do with my love for traveling.

Looking at the fishing boats

The weather is great. It's twenty degrees Celcius I think and just enough wind to be comfortable. It's good to tour Zeeland on a normal weekday. Almost empty roads because there are no tourists around.

After less than an hour touring I'm driving on the Zeeland bridge, the longest bridge in Holland. The weather is nice but it is not very clear. When I'm on the beginning of the bridge I can't see the other end.

The Zeelandbridge

Past Zierikzee I drive in the direction of Burgh-Haamstede until I see a sign to Oudorp. Following the N57 I drive past the Deltaworks and past Oudorp in the direction of Hellevoetsluis and then to Rozenburg.

Ships near Rozenburg

When I arrive in Rozenburg, I cross a big bridge over the harbour and drive alongside the harbour where lots of big oil tankers come. I get on the road around the village Rozenburg and go to the harbour of the ferryboat to Maassluis.

I arrive just in time for the half past eleven ferrycrossing so I can drive on the ferry without waiting. On the ferry I chat with a Buell driver from The Hague and a few minutes later we arrive in Maassluis.

The ferryboat

Via Maassluis I drive through the Westland, past Honselersdijk to The Hague. From The Hague I drive past Voorburg, Leidschendam and through Voorschoten to Wassenaar. Because I'm behind schedule, I decide to get on the highway A44 to make up some time. In the neighbourhood of Sassenheim, I leave the A44 and past Lisse and Hillegom I drive in the direction of Haarlem.
At half past one I stop at the Texaco station at the Nieuwe Schipholweg in Vijfhuizen. I only need twelve liter so I did 5.8 liter on 100 kilometer. Not bad.

At two o'clock, I notice the golden arches of a McDonald and I'm hungry so it's McDonald time......
It is half past two when I leave the McDonald's. I had a tunnyfish salad, a Mcfishfillet and a milkshake and now I'm ready to get some kilometers under my wheels.
Before I leave the McDonalds, I ask for directions to Alkmaar and a few minutes after leaving the McDonalds I'm on the A9 to Alkmaar. I drive around Alkmaar and get on the N242 to the Afsluitdijk.
